Overview

Naltar is one of those off-the-radar destinations that feels like a well-kept secret — tucked into a side valley 45 kilometres above Gilgit, threaded with Himalayan pine forests, vivid alpine lakes, and a small ski resort that sees more eagles than tourists. In summer it's all about colour and quiet: cobalt blue lakes, wildflower meadows, and forest walks with mountain backdrops at every turn. In winter it transforms into a snow-covered cinematic landscape with some of the best skiing in Pakistan. Either season, it's a short trip that punches well above its weight.

Day by Day

01

Day 1

Arrival in Gilgit + Transfer to Naltar

Private pickup in Gilgit followed by a jeep transfer up into Naltar Valley — a 1.5-hour drive that climbs through pine forest with increasing mountain views. Arrive at the lodge in early afternoon, time to settle in and explore the immediate surroundings. An evening bonfire with dinner under a sky full of stars as temperatures drop and the valley goes completely quiet.

02

Day 2

Lakes Day

A guided circuit of Naltar's three famous alpine lakes — Naltar Lake, Bashkar Lake, and Pari Lake — each named and each with a different colour depending on the light and the mineral content of the glacial melt. Picnic lunch by the water, unhurried photography at each stop, and plenty of time to simply sit and look at a landscape that seems almost too saturated to be real.

03

Day 3

Ski Day (Winter) / Forest Hike (Summer)

In winter: a full day at Naltar Ski Resort, one of the highest ski areas in Pakistan and one of the few with maintained groomed runs. Beginners welcome — we can arrange gear, a lesson, and a guide. In summer: a guided hike above the treeline into the open alpine zone, with views across multiple valley systems and wildflower meadows that are vivid and dense in July. Your guide tailors the pace.

04

Day 4

Departure

Return jeep drive to Gilgit, with a stop at a roadside chai spot on the descent. Assistance with your onward journey — whether you're catching a flight from Gilgit or driving on to your next destination.

Physical requirements

  • Moderate fitness for summer hiking (2–3 hour forest walks)
  • Beginner skiing possible in winter — gear and guidance available
  • Jeep track into Naltar is bumpy — not ideal for those with severe back issues
  • Altitude in the valley is approximately 2,900m — mild acclimatisation may be needed

Good to know

Season matters enormously: skiing in winter (December–March), hiking and lakes in summer (May–October).

The jeep track into Naltar is unpaved and bumpy; we schedule it during daylight hours for safety.

Pack a warm layer year-round — evenings in the valley are crisp regardless of season.

The valley has limited mobile connectivity; inform your contacts before you go in.

FAQs

Can beginners ski at Naltar?

Yes — the resort has easy and moderate runs well-suited to beginners. We can coordinate gear rental, a lesson, and a guide for your first day on snow. It's a great introduction to skiing in a spectacular mountain setting.

Is Naltar good for photography?

Exceptionally. Lakes with impossible blue tones, pine forests, mountain ridgelines, and golden-hour light that lasts a long time at altitude. Many photographers plan return visits specifically for Naltar's palette.

Can we combine Naltar with Hunza?

Yes — it pairs very naturally. Naltar sits between Gilgit and Hunza, and we can build a combined itinerary. We'll tailor the order based on your arrival city and flight plan.

How long is the jeep ride into the valley?

Approximately 1.5 hours from Gilgit. The road is unpaved and climbs through pine forest — dramatic, not dangerous, and part of the experience.
